====== Surge Protection Devices (SPD) ====== Sometimes you may hear someone say, "The PC keeps freezing whenever it rains," or "Equipment suddenly stopped working after a thunderstorm." In many cases, a surge may be the cause. A surge is a sudden burst of electrical energy caused by lightning, electrical switching, or other unpredictable events. Just as we cannot stop lightning from occurring, we cannot completely prevent surges from happening. Instead, we protect our equipment from them. {{ :noise_book:spd.png?nolink |}} An SPD (Surge Protection Device) is installed at the power input and provides a path for surge energy to escape safely to ground. When a surge arrives, the SPD helps divert it away from the equipment. Proper grounding is essential. Without a ground connection, the surge has nowhere to go. You can think of an SPD as a lightning rod for your electrical system. It does not prevent surges, but it can help keep them from damaging your equipment. [[index|←Noise Is My Friend]]
