A Typical Power Input Setup

In industrial equipment, the power input section is often built using the following components:

  1. Circuit Breaker – Protects against overloads and short circuits
  2. SPD (Surge Protection Device) – Protects against surge voltages
  3. Noise Filter – Reduces electrical noise coming from the power line
  4. SMPS (Switching Power Supply) – Converts AC power into the DC voltage required by the equipment

The PLC, controller, main board, and other electronic circuits are then connected after these devices.

This arrangement has become common because each component serves a different purpose. Together, they provide a first line of defense against many of the electrical problems found in real-world environments.

If your equipment does not include some form of surge protection and noise filtering, it may be unnecessarily exposed to electrical noise and voltage surges.
