A surge is a sudden spike in voltage caused by lightning, power-line disturbances, or other electrical events. While it is impossible to prevent surges from occurring, it is possible to protect equipment from the damage they can cause.
An SPD (Surge Protection Device) is designed for this purpose. When a surge enters the power line, the SPD redirects the excess energy to ground, helping to protect the connected equipment.
SPDs are typically installed at the power input of a control panel or electrical system. A proper ground connection is essential, as the surge energy must have a safe path to flow away from the equipment.
You can think of an SPD as a lightning rod for your electrical system. It cannot stop a surge from occurring, but it can help prevent the surge from damaging your equipment.
